Globos has been recovered

25.Oct.2009 - 01:00

The rocket Globos was found today just about 1 km due west from the estimated landing spot. This came as a surprise since I and others had search by air over that area many times.

It seemed that the rocket did not got dragged on the ground and a possible reason for that is the heavy rain just after launch. The parachute was all packed up with mud and was thus not fluctuating (according to the guy who found it). There where no visible marks in the ground.

The person (Ingmundur Magnusson) who found the rocket did also walked there about a month ago and was only about 1 km from the rocket but did´t spot it at that time. He went there again today and decided to walk further west or in the same direction as the wind at the launch day. He basically just walked directly at it. I would like to thank him for his time and effort in finding the rocket!

I assume that the electronics is not operational since the recovery area is close to the sea and thus the humid air is salty. I will hook it up when I go back to Iceland in the end of December.

The rocket body seems to be in good condition. The lower flange/coupler that was made from steel is very rusty and bent. The thickness of the material was only about a 1 mm so I assumed that this would happen. The nose cone is intact as well as the body tubes. The fins seems to be intact as well. On the photos you can clearly see some heat related damage to thefin tube. This was expected since the hot exhaust gases hit the tube as was seen in one of the static tests. I did´t insulate it and just went for it since the wall thickness is 3.2 mm.

Here are some photos of the rocket. Some are off focus but I enlisted them as well.

Update: Here is the location shown and the estimated landing spot as well as the launch site.

Summary

22.Sep.2009 - 01:00

Here is a summary of the multimedia that was gathered at the launch. I would like to thank those who took the pictures and videos for allowing me to publish them.

Pictures from me, Kári Guðnason, Eyþór Hauksson, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Anton Brink. Press coverage from Channel 2 (Stöð 2) Arnór Bergur Kristinnson took this video. Unknown spectator.

Acceleration, velocity, altitude and descent rate

Extreme values:
Altitude: 2638 meters
Velocity: 294 m/s or 1058 km/h
Acceleration: 12.9 g or 126 m/s^2
Descent rate: ~8 m/s

Unfortunately the rocket is still missing even though the following have been done
- four flights over the area (down to 300 meters AGL)
- hiking up to the mountain Keilir and looked around with a 7x50 telescope
- dirt bikes used to cover the area
- special trained rescue dog with his trainer searched the area around (1-3 km radius) the estimated landing zone

Those who are willing to participate in the search of the rocket can contact me. It is always good to take a walk from time to time :)
